Like I mentioned in my previous post, Sam took swimming lessons the last two weeks. The first two days were GREAT and Sam did an awesome job. The third day was when things went downhill quickly. Sam learned (hopefully!) not to run on concrete when he tripped and skinned his knee up right before swim class that day. He got so excited seeing their splashpad-type thing, that he didn’t pay attention to where he was going. It bled. A lot. Therefore, that day in class, he would not move his legs at all. Therefore, there was no kicking being done. That was also the day where he started having to float on his back and thus getting water in his ears. He didn’t like this one bit either. I finally got him to float on his back with me keeping his head up on my chest so that I kept his ears out of the water. I knew immediately whenever an ear went under though because he would fuss and mess with his ear. He even tried folding them closed to keep water out! Too cute!!

Well, every day after that consisted of floating and “swimming” on their backs and, ultimately, going under the water for a quick second. Sam DEFINITELY didn’t enjoy that and would come up screaming and crying and messing with his ears.

On Wednesday of this past week, Travis was able to go with us to swim school and he managed to get pictures. As usual, there are a lot more in our August online album so feel free to go check them out. Here are just a few…

Sam is so talented- he can swim and suck his thumb at the same time!

We were rolling them from their tummies to their backs. Sam’s facial expression is priceless- he was anticipating the water that was about to get in his ears.

“Floating” on his back…

He LOVES hanging onto the side of the pool- and trying to climb out. Thankfully, he didn’t succeed that day. HA!

He did enjoy swimming to me though.

Swim school concluded this past Thursday. On Friday, Sam went to the doctor because his chest congestion, that we thought was just allergies, was getting worse. When the doc checked him out, she told me that he had one ear full of fluid and one ear full of puss. Now we know why Sam has really not enjoyed having water in his ears lately- they were already slam full of fluid! Sam hasn’t had a fever or anything so I was shocked about the infected ear- not so much about the fluid. The infected ear has had fluid in it since April and she said that was has probably happened is that it has been there so long that it finally got infected. He was diagnosed with Otitis Media with Effusion and she recommended that he see an ENT about getting tubes in his ears. I have already spoken to our speech therapist about my thought that he needed tubes due to his language delay but our doctor’s office wanted to hold off to see if his little body could fix it itself. Even though I get frustrated with the whole lack of speaking issue, I appreciate the fact that our doctor’s office doesn’t just rush to recommend tubes at the first sign of ear problems. I’ve heard so many stories of children getting them and not really needing them and the damage that it can do. However, over the last month or two, I have really been praying about Sam and his ears and I felt like if he needed it done then it would be made clear. Having the doctor recommend it is about as clear as it can get! HA!! Therefore, tomorrow morning I will be calling an ENT to set up an appointment. Thankfully, this office does tubes in office so we won’t have to go to the hospital for all that craziness and expense. Whew- what a relief! I will keep you guys updated on what transpires at the ENT once we get to see him.

So, sorry about the lack in posting lately but, as you can see we’ve been SUPER BUSY!! Hopefully now that summer break is drawing to a close, things will be calmer and I can stay on top of this blog better.
