Once Sam woke up and we all got ready, we headed to Gatlinburg. The best thing that I loved about living 30ish minutes from Gatlinburg was the ability to take the back roads into town and thus avoid the plethora of lights that awaits you at exit 407 on I-40. I despise stop and go traffic- usually because I usually start feeling a little carsick. Ugh! Anyway, since we took the back road into Gatlinburg, we drove over this bridge…

Then we drove past Cape Hatteras. We were both in shock at this sight- we thought that lighthouse was on the Outer Banks. I guess we were wrong…

Thankfully, Travis was a bit rusty on a few of the shortcuts and missed one. This caused us to be able to go past the Bush’s beans plant. Yes, Bush’s cans their beans in the Smoky Mountains. It is kind of funny because you are just driving along, admiring the view and then BAM there is a bean factory. HA HA!

I would love to go back and go in this store/museum.

After some more curvy roads, a single lane road with MAJOR mountain-side drop off, and a few “moos” from Sam (cows are everywhere on the back roads) we arrived in Gatlinburg. Though not the Georgia Aquarium (by far my fav), this is a pretty cool aquarium.

We didn’t go there- it wasn’t in our budget for this trip. We will probably go there on a later trip though.

We found a parking space and then headed to the main reason we went to Gatlinburg-

The Pancake Pantry!!

Travis introduced me to the Pancake Pantry shortly after I moved up there. It is amazing! It is ridiculously crowded on the weekends though so we would always go on Tuesday mornings since those were our mutual day off each week. Therefore, I think I have stood in this line…

MAYBE once or twice. By the way, that was a fairly short line for that place.

Once inside, we ordered amazing food. Sam enjoyed dipping his pancakes in Travis’ “compote”- aka fruity syrup stuff.

From April 2011

I ordered my “regular”- marvelous blintzes. It is raisins, pecans, ricotta and cream cheese inside of blintzes with blueberry-orange marmalade “compote” on top. YUM-O!

Once we finished, we walked down to a trolley stop. I think that was Sam’s main reason in wanting to go to Gatlinburg- to ride the “roarrey”. It was his first time on a trolley. We told him they wouldn’t let him on if he hadn’t eaten breakfast first so that he wouldn’t pitch a fit when he realized we were doing something else BEFORE riding the “roarrey.”

He got a picture with each parent while on the ride…

We rode our loop all the way around town and then back to the convention center so I could look at the arts and crafts fair that was going on. The best part was actually outside the building- the men who carve bears out of wood using chain saws. It was so neat!

We walked around some more, played skee-ball in the arcade, spun the big water marble thing at Ripley’s Believe it or Not…

and then ate lunch at a New Orleans Sandwich shop. The food was good but I didn’t get a picture. It tasted about as authentic as I would expect something that wasn’t actually in Nawlins to taste so we were very satisfied. 🙂

On our way back to the car, I got a picture of some shirts that made me laugh and think of my dad. Therefore, Dad, this picture is for you…

Sam didn’t make it out of the city limits before going to sleep. Thankfully, when we got back to the hotel, he went to sleep again and took his normal nap. He did so well- we didn’t take a stroller nor did we carry him- he walked everywhere we went.

That night, we went over to some friends’ house to eat and hang out. Sam had a blast. He got to play basketball for a bit…

and then he moved on to his favorite yard activity- the trampoline!! Thankfully, Theresa helped watch him while he and her boys played so I could take pictures. He laughed so much! It was great!!

He LOVED IT when the cat jumped up there with them!!

Eventually, Travis got up there with him and did some wrestling moves…

but then he just went back to regular jumping.

We left soon after that and went back to our hotel room. After Sam had his bath, he QUICKLY went to sleep in his hotel bed. Doesn’t he just look so peaceful?

That was, by far, our busiest day while we were up there. Sam did great and enjoyed every minute of it. The only thing I remember him fussing about was the fact that we wouldn’t let him get any apple juice on our way out of the hotel that morning. Our rule is that he must drink his milk first and since he hadn’t done that AND we weren’t waiting around all morning for him to finish it before heading to G’burg, he just didn’t get juice. He got some later and was totally fine though. 🙂

Steph 🙂
