Yesterday, we took advantage of one of the perks for our Alexandria Zoo membership- free admission to other zoos! Therefore, we drove up to Monroe (about 1.5 hours away) and checked out their zoo. It wasn’t too bad but we definitely prefer our zoo- there are no roofs that have caved in and the vines and such are not so overgrown that you can’t see the animals inside. It was a bit frustrating and sad to see just how run down this zoo is. However, we did enjoy ourselves and will probably go back but not any time soon. 🙂

These little guys were cute (I think they are lemurs?)

One thing we REALLY liked that our zoo doesn’t have (hint hint Alex Zoo) was the feeding/petting area…

Sam wouldn’t feed the animals- he just wanted to pet. Travis was our designated feeder. 🙂

I hate taking pictures through a cage. UGH! It is sooo hard to get my camera to focus correctly. This was an animal none of us had ever seen. I really liked it.

Here is the information about them. I really like the “fun fact”- we laughed about that for awhile.

Sam ran off to see if they had a wallaby- we didn’t see one…

They did have a kangaroo that was just chillin in the sand…

Sing with me now…everyone’s got a water buffalo…yours is fast but mine is slow…

The coolest thing I saw the entire visit was the tiger. Our tiger just has a drinking hole, their tiger has a swimming hole. When we showed up, it was swimming around and doing acrobatics in the water. Check out the pictures…

In case you haven’t gotten enough of this beautiful tiger, I also made a video that you can watch at the end of the post.

One example of how much in need of repair this zoo is…

The hippo was locked out of its water tank. We think they were cleaning it- it smelled atrocious!

They, too, have wandering peacocks…

Sam REALLY wanted to go into this greenhouse. However, they QUICKLY came out due to the heat and humidity. HA HA!!

The mountain lion below almost caused Travis and I to need to change our shorts. We were walking down this dirt path beside a fence that didn’t look to be containing any animals. Well, out from behind a tree jumps this mountain lion and I am pretty sure I leaped about 12 feet up in the air (anyone who’s seen my basketball “skills” should be laughing hard now)…it scared the daylights out of me. It then just kept pacing along the fence. The crazy thing was just how QUIETLY he leapt/walked/etc.- I can definitely see how they can sneak up on you out in the wild. Wow! I’ve never been so thankful for a fence in my life.

Sam thought this turtle needed to see his keys and I am pretty sure the turtle couldn’t care less…

Cool iguana…

Pretty sure that outside of our honeymoon, this is the first time I’ve seen live armadillos. Travis and I have a movie of us “playing” (please read tormenting) on on Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia while on our honeymoon. The ones at the zoo were just an entertaining except we couldn’t get any of them to ball up. They definitely look better when they are alive instead of laying upside on the side of the road!

It was HOT- see our sweaty hair?

Travis doesn’t seem to sweat like the rest of us. Oh well…
Instead of a train ride (it was broken down- has been for years), we took a boat tour…

There is a giant pig-like animal in that house. That breed is immune to diabetes so scientists study them to try to find a cure.

Once our boat tour was over, we headed to a Mexican restaurant that Travis located. It was delish!! Then we headed back home. We were all exhausted.

Below is the video that I compiled of various animals. If you don’t want to watch the entire thing, at least watch the tiger swimming. 🙂
