“The City of Lights”

My parents have returned Sam to us.

One of the things we decided would be fun to do was to drive up to Natchitoches, LA and check out their Christmas lights. I’ve heard they have really cool Christmas lights and they are very beautiful since they are on the Cane River. Well, this weekend was the last weekend of the display so we quickly went up there.

I took a couple of pics before it got dark.

Yes, it was a bit cold. Yes, Sam is wearing Lightning McQueen gardening gloves. I love my boy!

It was very nice but didn’t seem like enough lights to justify the town being called “City of Lights.” Supposedly, there are other homes in the area that participate in the light decorations. However, they were scrooges tonight.

This is me and Papa…

From December 2012

I love this picture. I took a picture of it today when I saw it on Grandmama’s fridge. This was when I was about Sam’s age. Papa would take me down to the creek that ran beside their driveway and I would look at the little fish.

Tomorrow, we start heading back to LA. My back is SOOO ready to be done riding around. My little car is comfy and is a good riding car however, there are only so many miles my pregnant body can handle and I think I passed that on the way to Salisbury. Oops!

Sam and the train

We went out to the Tesseniar “old” house today. Travis’ cousin, Christi, and her husband, David, have put together a cool play train out in the yard for all the little kiddos to play on. Today, the only kiddo there was Sam. However, there will be plenty of kiddos tomorrow for family Christmas. But, there will be EVEN MORE next Christmas because there are 4 due in the first 5 months of 2013. WHOA! This was the first time Sam had been able to play on the train and so he had a blast and I, of course, took pictures.

Saints vs. Falcons!

Today was the day that I’ve been waiting for for what has felt like YEARS- the Saints and the Falcons played each other in the Super Dome. Since my parents are in SC taking care of Mama, we spent the night with our friends, The Englands. Travis was probably more excited about this aspect than the game because he and Archie played in the garage with wood tools. 🙂 Sam was excited about it too because he got to stay with their youngest daughter, Emily, while we were at the game. They had a blast playing the Wii, feeding ducks, and other fun “things” (that is all we could get out of Sam.)

When we got there, we walked around outside and took pictures of various statues and things. I hadn’t been to a Saints game since I was in college. Travis had never been to an NFL game so we just soaked everything up. 🙂

He now has ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) if I remember correctly but he still comes to every game that he is able to. I was glad to see him at this game because he wound up being taken to the hospital during last week’s game for some kind of medical complications.

The Greenville Zoo

One morning, Dad, Sam, and I went to the Greenville Zoo. Our zoo membership here in Pineville got Sam and I in for free and my dad qualifies for the senior citizen rate so it was a super cheap outing. 🙂
The first thing we did was chose which animal we wanted to “help” by feeding a token into a display. Sam picked our animal- Philippine Crocodile… I guess he thought it was a LA Alligator.

Please notice my dad in the background- I get my camera in the face “thing” honestly… like father like daughter. 🙂

Our next stop was the elephants. Our zoo doesn’t have elephants. They are supposed to be expanding the Africa part of our zoo so I am hoping that whenever they do it we will get some! I love elephants.

Greer, SC…

After spending some time with Mum Gail and Pop Pop Earl, Sam and I drove back across the border into SC. We went to Greer to visit with my grandma and Dad for a couple of days. Sam LOVES visiting with Mama because he loves all her “cool toys”- HA! He has gotten really good at steering her wheelchair. Mama is even brave enough to let Sam push her back to her room! I am his mom and I don’t know if I could handle that! Hee Hee!

From August 2012

She has one of those walkers with wheels and a seat and Sam eats all of his meals on that walker when we visit. It makes me laugh.

From August 2012

Yes, we eat a lot of Bojangles when we go to SC because my favorite meal there is gluten free and there are NO Bojangles anywhere near us. 😦 They do look at you like you are crazy when you tell them you don’t want their amazingly delicious biscuit though. 🙂

Mama has always kept random things on her fridge. Currently, there are drawings from some of my cousins (the youngest is in high school) from when they were elementary age, various newspaper clippings, and my Carson-Newman faculty ID. I think it is random that it is on the fridge but she was excited when I got my first “real” job after graduating seminary. I think it is even funnier that Travis is the Vice President for Academic Affairs at LC and I had a job in “higher ed” before he did. Obviously, he has passed me now though. 🙂

From August 2012

Sam likes to sleep in total darkness- even night lights bother him. So, my dad and I tried to rig up a blanket to act as a curtain to block all the lights of Wal-Mart from shining in Sam’s room. I really like how it ended up looking more like a stained glass window!

Kliebert’s Turtle and Alligator Farm

We spent this past weekend at my parent’s house. They weren’t there but we still enjoyed “house crashing” for a few days. A Groupon was released last week for Kliebert’s Turtle and Alligator Farm in Hammond, LA. The Klieberts are one of the family from “Swamp People”- Big Mike and T-Mike are the two gator hunters. I thought this would be a fun family outing and it would be a great way to introduce Sam to alligators, up close and personal. Travis and I have toured alligator farms/ranches before and held gators but Sam has never been able to. When I was telling him about it and telling him that he would get to hold an alligator he was so excited. It was cute.

When we got there Saturday morning, T-Mike actually held the door open for us. To me, it was neat to be able to interact with some of the “stars” of Swamp People. They were SOOOO friendly and down to earth. They started the tour a bit early and so we quickly walked past the turtle part of the farm and caught up at the first alligator pond.

From July 2012

Our tour guide was throwing food out and so we got to watch the gators fight over food. One neat thing about gators is that they have to hold their head out of the water to swallow their food. They actually hold it almost straight up so that the flap in the back of their throat opens for the food to go down.

From July 2012

We then walked past a pond covered in water lilies. This is the breeding pond and it is currently full of males who are healing from all the fights that occur during breeding season and the females who are actively guarding their eggs. Female alligators are VERY protective of their young and will stay with them until they are about 2 years old. Our guide informed us that if we were ever out somewhere and saw a small (3-4 feet) alligator to be careful because there is probably a momma gator nearby. 🙂 You can’t tell in the picture but the pond is full of gators. They are under the lilies. When our guide got inside the gate with them and started throwing food, we could watch the lilies move- it was a bit creepy.

From July 2012

Here is a gator that was not in the water while we were there.

From July 2012

Here is one that was spying on us…

From July 2012

This picture is a bit blurry but you can see our guide feeding one of the alligators.

From July 2012

Then he started throwing meat to get more to come and “playing” with a LARGE/GIGANTIC gator nearby.

From July 2012

From July 2012

He was rubbing on their nose to get them to open their mouth so he could QUICKLY tap their teeth and get them to slam their mouth shut. This was so we could hear the “chomp” and he could tell us how many 1000s of pounds of pressure these gators bite down with. It was CRAZY!

From July 2012

Next we went over to a different part of the breeding pond so we could meet Crusher (a 17 foot male gator). The group was LARGE and so we couldn’t get very close for great pictures. However, this is a pretty good one that Travis managed to snag- and advantage of a tall husband is the ability to take pictures OVER a 7 foot fence. 🙂

From July 2012

From July 2012

Then our tour guide went into a pen and caught one of the 6 foot alligators and taped its mouth shut.

From July 2012

Then he was able to show various features of the alligator to us. In the picture below, he is pointing out these two holes (that look like cotton is sticking out of them) which are super sensitive sensors that allow the gator to know when something is moving around in the water. His example was that sometimes we see video of an animal drinking water and an alligator coming up and grabbing the animal. Those sensors help it know where food is.

From July 2012

He also showed how an alligator has two eyelids- the outer one goes up and down and is like our eyelids. The inner one goes side to side and is used underwater so the alligator doesn’t get water in its eyes.

From July 2012

Then whoever wanted to was given the chance to sit on the alligator and hold its head. Sam decided he wanted to do that.

From July 2012

Then, anyone who wanted to was given the chance to hold a baby gator. Sam wanted to do that too. 🙂

From July 2012

Our tour was over by this point (and we were BURNING UP) so we headed indoors to the gift shop. They didn’t have any Christmas ornaments but Sam did manage to get a keychain (surprise surprise!)

He also had his picture taken with Big Mike. When Big Mike saw the shirt Sam was wearing (former Reggie Bush Saints jersey,) he looked at me and said he was going to have fun with him. This was the first picture I got…

From July 2012

Then, after a good bit of laughter from both of them, they took a “serious” picture.

From July 2012

Apparently there were two birthday parties that morning (which might explain the LARGE group we toured with) and the Kliebert’s provide the cake. Pretty cool!

From July 2012

I was in charge of video while Travis snapped the picture. I combined them all together below. Sorry for the shakiness- I was also trying to keep an eye on Sam so that he didn’t become gator bait.

It was a neat tour and was a GREAT first tour for Sam. It was definitely HOT though but, we do live in Louisiana now. 🙂

I am looking forward to introducing Sam to “Swamp People” on TV one day and see if he recognizes the Klieberts. I think that would be fun.

🙂

Happy 4th of July!

We’ve had a fun 4th of July as a family.

First, we had a red, white and blue breakfast treat. It was delicious!

Then we went to the zoo and checked things out. Sam hadn’t been since we returned from our trip. The first “new” thing was the mommy peacock and her new baby.

From July 2012

Next “new” thing were porcupine feet. That might sound silly but usually the porcupine sleeps so that we can just see his quills. We’ve never seen his feet before. They were kind of cute.

Our sad “new” thing is Jabo’s empty chamber. It still makes me sad.

From July 2012

After that morning fun, we hung out at the house, ate supper, and then headed to the riverfront to watch fireworks with our friends, The Millers. They are both music faculty here at LC and they have an 18 month old son who Sam adores playing with. I think the feeling is probably mutual. 🙂

We took “yellow car” and both boys sat in it for awhile before wanting to get out and walk around while we waited. Once the show started, Sam sat in the yellow car for most of the fireworks but Bowden sat in his mom’s lap. Both did well and LOVED the fireworks. It was a fun evening.
